What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture uses sterile, disposable needles to redirect the energy currents of the body, mind and spirit. Acupuncture is used to help the body heal illness and balance the whole person for optimal wellness. We all know deep in our hearts when something is not right. Acupuncture is one way to reestablish a bodily felt sense that things are right again, or beginning to get better. We are not our disorders, we are amazing vessels of energy and light with an infinite ability to change and heal.

Chinese medicine views the body, mind, and spirit as an interrelated whole. Disorders of any one of these three (body, mind, spirit) will produce disorders in the others. We see this is the case when mental and emotional stress and imbalances precede physical symptoms. By addressing both non-physical and physical problems at an early stage we can prevent more serious symptoms from arising.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Clinically, Acupuncture increases oxygenation and circulation, regulates the endocrine and nervous systems, and alleviates pain by blocking pain receptors and stimulating the secretion of endorphins.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine (dietary practice, herbs, movement, tui na, gua sha and qi gong) can be traced back nearly 5,000 years. Together, they constitute the basis of Chinese medicine, which is predicated upon the notion of balance. Wellness depends on a balance of energy (oxygen and nutrients) and the movement of that energy throughout the body, mind and soul. Balancing the interplay of the emotional and physical form the basis of healing. In our society where the body has become divorced from the mind and the spirit it is the Acupuncturist’s work to weave them back together to reestablish wholeness and wellness.

Acupuncture is a lot more than inserting fine needles into specific points on the body. When I meet a new client we discuss their whole medical background and goals for treatment. I select the appropriate techniques for the individual be it acupuncture, reiki, tui na (Chinese orthopedic massage), facial rejuvenation acupuncture or ear acupuncture. We discuss how life style impacts wellbeing and discuss positive changes that are practical and do-able.
